Palmetto Scholars Academy (PSA) welcomes students entering grades 6–12 who reside in any county within the state of South Carolina. As a statewide public charter school, PSA is open to eligible students regardless of district boundaries, allowing families across South Carolina to access our academic programs. Residency within the state is required at the time of enrollment, and admission is subject to the school’s established enrollment and lottery procedures in accordance with state and charter school regulations.

Currently, Palmetto Scholars Academy (PSA) is planning for a minimum of 72 seats and a maximum of 96 seats in the 6th–9th grade cohort. In addition, enrollment for grades 10–12 is capped at a maximum of 72 seats. These enrollment limits are designed to support appropriate class sizes, staffing capacity, and instructional quality, while ensuring the school remains in compliance with academic, operational, and charter school requirements. Final seat availability is subject to enrollment confirmation, staffing, and grade-level needs for the academic year.

Palmetto Scholars Academy (PSA) maintains its own independent academic calendar and does not formally follow the Charleston County School District (CCSD) calendar. While PSA may align with CCSD’s schedule at times for planning purposes, alignment is not guaranteed. As an independent public charter school, PSA makes its own decisions regarding school breaks, early dismissals, and instructional days.

The same applies to weather-related delays or school closures. Decisions regarding delays or cancellations are made independently, based on student and staff safety, operational readiness, and guidance from appropriate authorities. Families will be notified directly of any schedule changes through official PSA communication channels.

Palmetto Scholars Academy (PSA) offers a wide variety of clubs and extracurricular activities designed to support student interests, leadership development, creativity, and academic growth. These opportunities encourage student engagement beyond the classroom and help foster a well-rounded educational experience. Current and anticipated offerings include, but are not limited to:

PSA values student individuality and initiative. Students also have the opportunity to create and propose their own clubs during the school year, provided they meet participation guidelines and have a teacher sponsor. Club offerings may vary from year to year based on student interest, staffing, and scheduling availability

Student schedules at Palmetto Scholars Academy (PSA) vary based on grade level and academic programming. Course structures are intentionally designed to align with instructional goals, graduation requirements, and postsecondary preparation.

For example, seniors at PSA participate as part-time students at approved postsecondary institutions, including the College of Charleston and Trident Technical College, where they enroll in approved Dual Enrollment credit-bearing courses. Courses taken at these institutions are semester-based, in accordance with college academic calendars. At the same time, seniors will continue to take year-long courses at PSA, allowing for continuity in instruction and graduation alignment.

For all other grade levels, student schedules typically include a combination of semester-based and year-long courses, depending on the subject area and grade-level requirements. Scheduling may vary annually based on academic offerings, student placement, and program availability.

Nationally, it is estimated that approximately 3 million K–12 students — about 6 percent of the student population — are academically gifted.

In our region of South Carolina, local districts such as Berkeley County, Charleston County, Dorchester School District Two, and Dorchester School District Four collectively serve several thousand academically gifted students across all grade levels. For example, Dorchester School District Two itself reports over 4,500 students identified as academically gifted district-wide.

Note: Specific, disaggregated counts of state-identified gifted students in grades 6–8 for each of these individual districts are not currently published in state report card summaries, so families should consult district gifted and talented coordinators or the South Carolina Department of Education for the most detailed local breakdowns.

Gifted students are individuals who demonstrate high levels of achievement or potential in one or more areas, including intellectual ability, creativity, artistic talent, leadership capacity, or specific academic disciplines. These students require specialized services, instructional strategies, and learning opportunities that go beyond what is typically provided in a traditional school setting in order to fully develop and maximize their abilities.

• Despite growing research and awareness, gifted students are often misunderstood. These misconceptions can delay identification, limit access to appropriate services, and hinder students from reaching their full academic and personal potential.

• “Gifted students don’t need help; they’ll do fine on their own.”
  Gifted students require intentional academic challenge, differentiated instruction, and social-emotional support. Without appropriate services, they may become disengaged, unmotivated, or develop poor academic habits.

• “That student can’t be gifted; she’s receiving poor grades.”
  Giftedness is not defined by grades alone. Gifted students may underachieve due to boredom, lack of challenge, learning differences, perfectionism, or emotional factors. High potential does not always translate into high performance.

• “Gifted students excel equally in all academic subjects.”
  Gifted learners often show uneven development. A student may demonstrate exceptional ability in mathematics or language arts while performing at grade level in other areas.

• “Gifted students are always happy, popular, and well-adjusted.”
  Gifted students may struggle with anxiety, perfectionism, heightened sensitivity, or feelings of isolation. Their advanced thinking can create social challenges, especially when peers do not share similar interests or maturity levels.

• “Gifted students make everyone else in the class smarter.”
  While gifted students may enrich classroom discussions, they should not be relied upon as peer instructors or role models at the expense of their own academic growth. Gifted learners need instruction that meets their advanced learning needs.

• “A child cannot be gifted if they have a disability.”
  Some students are twice-exceptional (2e), meaning they are both gifted and have a learning, physical, emotional, or behavioral disability. These students may be overlooked without comprehensive evaluation and support.

• “Our district provides gifted education because we offer AP courses.”
  Advanced Placement (AP) courses serve secondary students but do not replace gifted education services, particularly in elementary and middle school where foundational gifted programming is critical.

• “Acceleration is socially harmful for gifted students.”
  Research consistently shows that well-planned acceleration options—such as subject acceleration or grade advancement—often result in positive academic outcomes and social adjustment.

• “Gifted education programs are elitist.”
  Gifted education is not about privilege; it is about equity. Just as students with learning challenges require support, gifted students need appropriately designed instruction to meet their educational needs. Effective programs promote inclusive and fair identification practices.
