Dear PSA Community,

The PSA Board understands the myriad of perspectives, concerns, and opinions our community members hold in regard to the issues surrounding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on the impending return of our students and faculty to the classroom.

In light of the legal environment in the State of South Carolina and the school’s status as a public school under the auspices of the South Carolina Charter School District, the board is unable to authorize the school administration to implement a mask mandate. The actions and deliberations of the SC Governor, State Legislature, and State Supreme Court have left no room for the PSA Board and Administration to act independently in such a manner.

We encourage parents and other community members to share their opinions and concerns with their state legislators and others whose action would be required to enable school officials, including this Board, to take further action. To find your state legislators, please visit this website: https://www.scstatehouse.gov/legislatorssearch.php

Despite the lack of an actual mandate for the wearing of masks at Palmetto Scholars Academy, the board joins with the PSA Administration in strongly recommending the wearing of appropriate masks at school.

There is broad agreement in the school community that having students attend school in person is ideal and we are excited to reopen the school and welcome students back to PSA’s unique learning environment. Based on CDC and DHEC guidelines and recommendations, the best way to ensure that the school remains open for in-person learning, and to prevent outbreaks that would disrupt the learning environment, is to make sure that our school community is taking all reasonable steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the school. In addition to sanitization, physical distancing, and vaccination of eligible individuals, this includes a strong recommendation for students, faculty, and visitors to wear masks while in the school building.

We are confident in our community’s ability to pull together to keep each other safe and ensure the best possible learning environment for our students.

Sincerely,

The PSA Board
